The film, planned to hit theaters on December 18 of this year, is expected to be a dramatic conclusion to Phase Six of the MCU and features just about every Marvel hero we’ve seen in the MCU so far that isn’t dead (and seemingly at least one who we thought was? Maybe?). Naturally, then, everyone is wildly speculating about what’s going to happen in Doomsday, but the only people that know are those working very, very closely on the film itself……and also, to an extent, the Marvel Rivals developers.More like thisOpen Back Headphones: A Sound Experience Like No OtherSpeaking to IGN at the Game Developers Conference, the Marvel Rivals devs admitted to me that yes, they do actually know some of what’s going to happen in Avengers: Doomsday. At least as much as they need to in order to conduct their “Path to Doomsday” series of events. Announced earlier this month, Path to Doomsday will introduce updates throughout the year themed after each of the Avengers films: Avengers in April, Age of Ultron in June, Infinity War in August, and Endgame in October. This is all leading up to a massive event starting simultaneously with the release of Doomsday the film, in which the devs promise to “fully [ignite] the battlefield with all-new in-game content”.But it takes time to develop a game! Marvel Games executive producer Danny Koo, publishing director Yachen Bian, and creative director Guangyun “Guangguang” Chen told me in our interview that they plan out content around a year in advance, and right now they’re essentially pulling double duty between regular game updates and the Path to Doomsday. Naturally, then, they need to know at least some of what’s coming in Doomsday so they can prepare an event around it that makes sense. The Path to Doomsday begins! Because staff need all this information to prepare for what’s coming.”Bian, perhaps a little slyly, adds, “We know what we can know.”Mysterious. The Doomsday speculation remains in full swing: Halle Berry keeps claiming she won’t be in Doomsday as Storm, Marvel released a bunch of non-trailer trailers that it claims are just “narrative information”, and seemingly Thor will survive the film and make it all the way to Secret Wars.Rebekah Valentine is a senior reporter for IGN.
